Do you ever wonder why your skincare routine isn’t working?
Maybe you’ve tried multiple different products, tips, and ingredients but NOTHING seems to help improve the quality of your skin – trust me, I’ve been there and its very frustrating. Everyone’s skin is different and you have to find the right routine for yourself. Although, there are some skincare tips that really work for everyone, and will finally leave your skin feeling the way you’ve always wanted.
So how do we make that happen? By removing these 8 common reasons why your skincare routine isn’t working…so let’s fix it…fast!
1. Not Shopping for your Skin type
This is a HUGE reason why a skincare routine isn’t working for you. A lot of people don’t know what to buy according to their skin type and issues.

DRY SKIN
- Avoid Harsh Cleansers
- Use Rich creams before bed (thicker and more hydrating)
- Hydrating products ONLY like hydrating cleansers and toners
- Don’t use products that dry out the skin
- Use facial oils
OILY SKIN
- Avoid alcohol-heavy products they will make you produce more oil
- Avoid products that clog your pores
- Use a light moisturizer (no moisturizer can dry out the skin and cause more oil production)
- Avoid rich creams or thick moisturizers
- Look for water based products
COMBO SKIN
- Avoid Harsh cleansers
- DO NOT over-exfoliate
- Treat different areas with different products (one in the T-zone, another for cheeks and neck.)
2. Ways Your Skincare Routine isn’t Working: Using Ingredients WRONG
Make sure you are using ingredients the right way.
Vitamin C – in the mornings (no not mix with retinol)
Peptides – AM or PM but not everyday if its new to your skin
Retinol – ONLY at night and wear sunscreen the morning after

3. Skipping Sunscreen
I know not everyone enjoys that greasy feel of sunscreen but in the long run this SAVES your skin and it’s barrier.
Studies show that 80% of premature aging is from sun damage and not wearing SPF. Even old burns and acne scars that you think are gone can show up later as you age, so make sure to wear SPF and protect your skin as early as possible. Even indoors, apply SPF everyday as part of your skincare routine.
There are spray on options as well that you can apply overtop makeup that feel like a setting spray if you’re not a fan of applying it directly onto the face before makeup.
4. Not Doing Skincare in the Correct Order

- REMOVE ALL MAKEUP COMEPLETELY WITH A WIPE OR CLEANSER
- CLEANSE OFF ALL MAKEUP WITH A GENTLE OR OIL BASED CLEANSER
- PAT SKIN DRY
- APPLY A TONER
- APPLY EYE CREAM
- APPLY FACE SERUM (BASED ON YOUR NEEDS. ANTI-AGING, HYDRATION, ACNE, ETC.)
- APPLY MOISTURIZER
5. Why Your Skincare Routine isn’t Working: NOT Using Hyaluronic Acid
I think everyone should incorporate hyaluronic acid into their routine. This is such a great, hydrating, safe ingredient to use on the skin.
This works so well to keep the skin plump, dewy and hydrated. Find yourself a natural moisturizer that is good for your skin barrier and that has hyaluronic acid in it. This truly helps enhance your skin.
6. Not Targeting your main Skin Concern
Ask yourself: What is my main skin concern? Is it dry skin? Acne? Wrinkles? Excess oil? Then search for products that target that certain skin concern, but always add in a layer of hydration.
For example, if your main skin concern would be wrinkles, then you can use a Retinol serum to target that. Although, you want to add in moisture so you could sandwich that retinol with a hyaluronic acid barrier cream on top.
REMEMBER: Even if your main skin concern is oil, never skip moisturizer. Use a light moisturizer instead of a heavy one but never no moisturizer at all.
7. Why Your Skincare Routine Isn’t Working: You never exfoliate or are over-exfoliating
You may be over-exfoliating which causes redness and dryness but not exfoliating at all isn’t good either because you aren’t getting rid of old dead skin. So what is the sweet spot?
Exfoliating 1-2x per week is perfect! Just make sure you are using a GENTLE one because this won’t be too harsh on the skin.
8. Using the WRONG Products
In general it is best to use products that don’t have harsh chemicals, fragrance or silicone in them. These ingredients can irritate the skin, can be possible endocrine disruptors and can cause redness or acne to build up under the skin.
Search for products that are considered to be METABOLIC BEAUTY
Metabolic beauty and skincare helps to penetrate the skin instead of just covering the problem temporarily at the surface level. It also tends to be clean products that do not irritate the skin and protect the barrier.
